Oakville by the Numbers

01

Home of the Canadian Open

Glen Abbey Golf Club has hosted 31 Canadian Open championships since opening in 1977. Tiger Woods famously defeated Grant Waite here in 2000, and both Golf Canada and the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame call it home.

02

An Underground Railroad Stop

Oakville was one of the key stations on the Underground Railroad, helping enslaved African Americans escape to freedom in Canada. Bronte Village served as an entry point, and many chose to build their lives right here on the lakeshore.

03

Olympic Paddlers Trained Here

The Burloak Canoe Club on Sixteen Mile Creek has produced Olympic medal-winning paddlers including Larry Cain, Adam van Koeverden, and Mark Oldershaw — making Oakville a quiet powerhouse of Canadian sport.

04

Bought for $4,116

The entire parcel of land now known as the Town of Oakville was purchased at auction for approximately $4,116 in 1827 by founder William Chisholm. His family’s Erchless Estate is now the Oakville Museum — and worth considerably more than the original price.
